Care home visits

After the 3-5 children's visit to sing Christmas Carols at Pleyfauld Sheltered Housing for the elderly, we decided to create a "Pen Pal" system with the residents. This involves sending drawings from the children, as well as writing to the residents, and receiving letters in return. It would also include some more trips to visit the residents to sing songs, play games etc. We feel that by having an intergenerational ongoing project with the local sheltered housing residents, that it would result in extremely positive outcomes for both the children at the nursery and also the residents. We can also talk to the children about emotions such as empathy, respect and showing compassion for others and relate this to the GIRFEC Health and Wellbeing wheel.

The rota for the rest of the year is as follows:

Thursday 19th September - Autumn leaf sun catchers

Friday 18th October - Halloween craft

Monday 18th November - Musical instruments

Tuesday 17th December - Christmas bauble craft and carol singing

The Care Inspectorate is encouraging care services across Scotland to bring together younger and older people for everyone's benefit.

A new resource full of good practice examples is being launched to give care services ideas on how to bring generations together in a variety of care settings in a way that improves the quality of their lives.
