Curriculum
Scotland’s early years curriculum is all about giving children the best possible start in life. It covers learning from birth to around age 6, including nursery and the first year of primary school.
What matters most:
-
Children learn best through play. Play helps them build confidence, curiosity, language, early maths skills, and strong relationships.
-
Practitioners focus on nurturing, responsive relationships, making sure every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
-
Learning is child led, with adults supporting, extending, and encouraging children’s ideas and interests.
-
The curriculum follows the Early Level of Curriculum for Excellence, which ensures a smooth, gentle transition from nursery into Primary 1.
What your child experiences:
-
A warm, caring environment where they can explore, try new things, and develop independence
-
Activities that support their whole development — social, emotional, physical, language, and thinking skills
-
Opportunities to build early literacy and numeracy through meaningful, playful experiences
-
Support from skilled practitioners who understand child development and know how to help children thrive
The goal: Happy, confident, curious children who feel ready for the next stage of their learning journey.
